People's Power Parade for the Planet.
Draw the Line is a cross-country Day of Action taking place on September 20th in communities across Canada to resist Prime Minister Mark Carney’s anti-migrant, anti-Indigenous, and fossil fuel-driven policies. The Day of Action coincides with a global week of action calling for climate and economic justice worldwide.
In Penticton, parade with us. You can DECORATE a wheeled vehicle - bike, scooter, walker, wheelchair, cart - and bring signs. Muster at NORTH Gyro Park 11 am for a parade down Main St and back to Veterans Park 12:15 for SONGS, STORIES, SHARING and SOLIDARITY.

Daniel J. Pierce of ramshackle pictures worked with Dr. Younes Alila, PEng, UBC hydrology professor and researcher, to explain the connection between clear cutting and floods in BC.

Canadian Environment Week, June 1 to June 7, overlaps Penticton Seniors Week.
Seniors are more challenged by global warming and the effects of climate change than other demographics. Extreme events are more difficult to recover from, high costs from evacuations and insurance rates are sometimes brutal, and health effects are more severe.
AND seniors have lived through a time of plenty and relative comfort compared to what they know the next generations might face. They have experience and knowledge about what causes global warming and that there are solutions at hand. Their voices carry weight and can be used to push for a better future for coming generations.

Noble Ridge Vineyards and Winery OK Falls, BC
Our climate is changing, posing serious challenges to our vineyards and wineries. Grape growers are recovering from the 2024 frost event and applying mitigation techniques.
Benoit Gauthier, COO of Noble Ridge Vineyard and Winery, will illustrate how growers in the valley are implementing practices in response to increasingly challenging growing seasons. He will share steps taken to prepare soil and vines for extreme weather and guard against future catastrophic events.
Heat Pump & Retrofit Workshop

First Things First Okanagan, City of Penticton, District of Summerland, the RDOS, and Green Drinks Penticton have an event during Earth Week to learn about heat pumps!
This is an informative workshop on heat pump installation, common barriers, and real-life experiences from homeowners who made the switch.
Coffee and refreshments provided!
Following the event, Earth Day displays in the library foyer will take place from 12pm-3pm

Outdoor Ed for Gr 2 students
This fundraiser supports the development of an ecological identity for grade 2 students. First Things First Okanagan sees the deep value of introducing children to biodiversity so they know its importance.

Nicola, teacher at Queens Park Elementary in Penticton says:
Students build resilience and connection to the land, living things and water of the Okanagan with an emphasis on reconciliation and understanding human responsibility when being on the land.
They learn about local flora and fauna, scat, tracks and seasonality.
We visit Skaha Bluffs and Sunoka in the fall and late spring to build familiarity with place and see how places and ecosystems change through the year.
We visit Campbell Mountain to talk frankly about the landfill and human impacts.
We visit the McTaggert Conservation area in SkahaPpark to connect to Sylix pictographs and history and learn about the Bighorn Sheep.
The kids craft their land acknowledgment based on the trips as well

FTFO will be joined by Benoit Gauthier, Director of Wine Making and Viticulture at Noble Ridge Winery, who will share how fruit and wine growers in our neighbourhood are implementing practices that improve the soil, create effective cover vegetation, optimize irrigation, and address many other factors to prepare for increasingly challenging growing seasons.
